Graduating at the top of her class with a Masters in Exercise Physiology, Mary Lou went onto receive multiple awards in the Physical Education environment. Awards included multiple campus "teacher of the year awards", 2016 Cox Communications teacher of the year finalist, and 2013 A.A.P.H.E.R.D. National Physical Education T.O.Y. (runner-up).
